#002: Car Bras



A car bra (also known as a front-end mask) is a piece of vinyl that wraps around the front portion of a vehicle, protecting it against flying rocks, debris and anything else that might smack the front of your car, causing dents and scratches. I got that description from a website that sells them, so it's obviously a bit biased and wouldn't mention to you that this product simply creates the impression that Optimus Prime and Zorro have had a vehicular lovechild. Basically, car bras looks stupid. If the vinyl is so awesome at protecting the paintwork, why not have it cover the whole car? I'm sure there are people out there who would relish the chance to purchase a gimp mask for their vehicle. These are obviously the same people who consider Pimp My Ride to be educational programming and more than likely enjoy pumping Nickelback out of their unnecessarily bass-driven car stereos. If you're a demolition derby driver then I could appreciate the benefits of something that will catch and hold pieces of your car as they attempt to fall off. For anyone else, a car bra is basically a way of painting "I AM A DOUCHE" on your bumper without vandalising your vehicle.

If you are under 80 and have a car bra, you should sell your car.

Haha amen to that! I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds those RIDICULOUS.

I own a 99 Cavalier and it's not a rare occurance to see other 99 Cavalier's with those car bras (I didn't even know there was a name for them. I just called them "asshole caps"). It's like...dude, not only is your car considered an economy car, it's also over 8 years old. A tiny little dent is the last thing you should be fretting about regarding your car.

What about those of us who bought a car with the car bra already attached? My first car was a Cavalier and had one of those. I never thought anything of it. My current car, however, is also a Cavalier but without a gimp mask.

You're absolutely right; the car bra does look ugly but, when it's on the Cavalier it makes it look like "the Gimp" from Pulp Fiction's The Gold Watch section. Who'd want such association?

Your right on this one, car bras don't have a proper function, they cover the front of the car but this the rest of the car is exposed to the risks of scratching. Sure bras protect the area but they also ruin what should be the most beautiful side of the car. I use a car cover to keep my car clean and eventually protect it from scratches or water, I've been told the paint is keeping it's shining for a longer time this way.

I agree; car bra does look stupid but on the other hand it does protect the car's front end from scratches; few months ago I've rented a Toyota Avensis from a car rental Raleigh service and the bra was really useful. I've hit one or two flying rocks and there were no marks left on the car's paint.

I hate the car bra too; even if I manage to scratch the bumper or the front end of my car while parking the damage could always be repaired with common paintless dent removal tools so I don’t really see why it would be necessary to equip my car with such an ugly accessory.

pimples are really annoying, you can kill them using benzoyl peroxide but it will also make your skin red.
